A Dog Saved My Life
Fifteen years ago, I arrived in the U.S. as an immigrant, full of hope. I worked tirelessly to earn my citizenship and build a career as an executive chef. But behind the scenes, my kidneys were failing, and I didn’t even know it.
A routine doctor’s visit changed everything—I had 6 to 12 months before total kidney failure. Terrified but determined, I sought out every option. Then I found Dr. Frosh at Cedars-Sinai, who gave me hope. With his help, I fought for seven more years until I finally made it onto the transplant list.
Desperate to find a donor, I became my own advocate—organizing rallies, printing t-shirts, handing out posters. A friend donated billboard space for my message. When they went up, I knew my angel was coming.
At the same time, a stranger named Omar was having the worst day of his life. His beloved dog, Sophie, was dying of kidney disease. Heartbroken, he passed my billboard—again and again. Then, inspired by Sophie, he made the most selfless decision: to donate his kidney to a stranger.
One day, exhausted and barely moving, I took my kids to the movies when my phone rang: Cedars Hospital. The nurse said, “I believe we have your golden ticket.”
A few days later, an unknown number called. I answered.
It was Omar.
We connected instantly—bonding over family, animals, our struggles, and hope. He told me why he was doing this. He told me about Sophie.
Now, Omar isn’t just my donor—he’s my brother.
All of this…
Inspired by man’s most loyal friend.
Inspired by a wonderful dog named Sophie.
Someday, Sophie, I’ll meet you.
But not for a long, long time—
Thanks to you and Omar.
